ADaptation in Agriculture

ADA project

The ADA project - ADaptation in Agriculture - co-funded by the LIFE19 CCA / IT / 001257 - Action grants Climate Action program - aims to increase the resilience of the agricultural sector that uses knowledge and planning tools for producers and farmers to adapt to climate change.

What the Region does

The Life Ada project develops in line with the EU strategy for adaptation to climate change (COM 2013/216) and aims to outline specific measures for the agricultural sector. The main objective is to mitigate the risks and increase the adaptation of farms, with particular reference to events such as late frosts, hail, heat waves, heavy rains, droughts.

UnipolSai is the leader of the project and coordinates seven other public and private partners: ARPAE Emilia-Romagna, Cia – Italian Farmers, CREA Policies and Bioeconomy, Festambiente, Legacoop Agroalimentare Northern Italy, Leithà and the Emilia-Romagna Region.

The initial phase will be implemented in Emilia-Romagna and subsequently replicated in Veneto, Tuscany and Lazio for a total of 6,000 individual farmers and aggregated forms of producers (POs and cooperatives) in the selected regions. The objective will be pursued through the development of a model for the assessment and monitoring of farm risks and the dissemination of good practices and adaptation plans for three production chains connected with production with designations of origin and dairy products (Parmigiano Reggiano, wine, fruit and vegetables).

An innovative approach by insurance will also be promoted to maintain the insurability of farmers in the long term, despite the increase in catastrophic and systemic risks.

To reach the largest number of farmers and POs and support them in the decision-making process for the drafting of their adaptation plans, a tool will be built which, through algorithms, will highlight the current and future risks to which the user is exposed, as well as possible interventions that can be put in place to address it.

For the Emilia-Romagna Region, the project represents an opportunity to develop a strategy for adapting regional agricultural supply chains to climate change and define a series of intervention measures that can be included in the next Rural Development Program 2021-2027.
