LIFE+ Climate changE-R

Objectives

The project aims to demonstrate how to reduce greenhouse gases (Greenhouse gas - GHG) produced by Emilia-Romagna’s agricultural system.

PomodoroThe aim is to develop new regulations for agricultural production and animal husbandry, using the most

advanced technologies that have come out of local and international research, beginning with the Emilia-Romagna’s long experience in struggling with integrated production and the best livestock management techniques.

These Best Practices will promote, among others, a reduction in the use of fertilizers and pesticides, a more rational management of water resources, less invasive techniques for working the land, different modes of manure management, and new types of animal feed.

The areas on which they will be working are durum wheat flour, industrial-scale tomato production, the pear, the peach, the green bean, and cattle (for the production of drinking milk, Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese and meat).

An important step will be the on-farm demonstrations, thanks to a sample of farms that have already stated their availability. The ultimate goal is to permanently introduce the new standards in regional production chains, also thanks to the resources of the new rural development programme 2014-2020, supporting them and enhancing them for consumers.

The application of new methodologies must reduce emissions from agricultural sources in Emilia-Romagna by the equivalent of 0.2 million tonnes of CO2 in three years, in line with the objectives of the strategy Europe 2020.

The project will use the methodology of the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to calculate the carbon footprint, and therefore emissions from different crops.

This will be done taking into consideration all the crops with a general sustainability approach.

The gases most involved in climate change are carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrous oxide (N2O) and methane CH4). According to experts, the agricultural Sector as a whole contributes to 6.7% of greenhouse gases.
