The project aims to support the development of the pork chain in western Kosovo by enhancing forms of cooperative production and the traditional skills of women belonging to minorities in the framework of a progressive adaptation of the country to European standards in the breeding, slaughtering sector and marketing of meat.

The project, funded by the European Union and implemented between December 2014 and April 2017, was managed by RTM - Volunteers in the World in partnership with two Kosovar realities: Local Democracy Agency Kosovo and the Women Indira Association and with the support of ERVET - Emilia-Romagna Economic Development of the Territory, University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, AVUK - Veterinary Agency of Kosovo and Municipality of Klina. The main beneficiaries of the project were 12 women, belonging to the Albanian Catholic and Serbian Orthodox communities, engaged in pig breeding and gathered in the EVA Cooperative. The objective of the AWARE project was to support the development of the fresh pork meat chain in the western region of Kosovo. The intervention strategy was aimed at increasing the production and management standard of the family pig farms of the E.V.A.

One of the fundamental actions of the project, to which the Emilia-Romagna Region contributed, was the definition and adoption of a production regulation on Pig Farming and processing, to formalize the good practices of management and processing of pork. The availability of a regulation has allowed EVA members to carry out their activities independently and will also allow the transmission of knowledge and skills to other workers to carry out the farming activity in the future.

  • The project developed on four main axes:

Strengthening of productive capacity by the cooperative - With the support of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia and the Kosovo Veterinary Agency, several training sessions have been organized both for veterinary staff operating in western Kosovo and for cooperative members in order to improve their farm management skills. In a second phase, technical and financial support was provided to implement 12 customized development plans for the farms.

Production development - With the support of the Municipality of Klina and the Kosovo Veterinary Agency, a slaughtering plant was built to European standards and provided technical and financial support for the start of production.

Marketing - With the technical support of ERVET, a sector study was launched on the basis of which a marketing plan was drawn up implemented with the help of Local Democracy Agency in order to include new products on the regional and national market.

Branding - a production specification for pork and the White Drini brand have been developed and registered thanks to the assistance of ERVET and the Emilia-Romagna Region and promoted in the country with the contribution of Local Democracy Agency.

To date Cooperativa EVA is in its fourth year of production.
